We left off last time with me lying in bed at the artists’ apartments in Tisno, calming down after a crazy boat party and trying to gather forces for my set at the Olive Grove later that evening. While I was lying there it got dark outside and I knew that the atmosphere down at the site would be transforming. I had made a conscious decision to rest instead of seeing Margaret Dygas - who according to a friend played not a single open hi hat in her entire set - but I knew I wanted to get back in time to see most of DJ Masda before it was my turn. I’m obviously familiar with him through sets online but had never had the chance to see him play live, so I wasn’t going to miss it. Also, after that rather unsatisfying lunch, I was hungry - though as usual the hunger was tussling with my nerves for executive control of my stomach.
I feel like mentioning here that at no point during the long weekend did I get a taxi or a lift between the flat and the festival site. Part of this was because it was only a 20-30 minute walk around the beautiful bay at Tisno. But part of it was also a need for alone time, something I’ve always prioritised but I’ve noticed has kicked in even more strongly over the past few years. (Ironic given the sheer amount of enforced alone time we’ve all been through since covid.) After Spaced in October I got three night buses home instead of a taxi. And when I decided to leave Pickle Factory a bit early on New Year’s Day it was because Stansted Airport was somehow calling me (said literally no one, ever). At Dimensions on that Saturday evening the lie-down and shower at the flat did their job, before the solo walk back to the site really got the blood pumping again and put me in the right frame of mind for the show.
